Whereismap 0 comments by chance, i discovered the bookworm gardens on a milwaukee mothers blog and included it directly in our travel planning, as we were traveling along lake michigan anyway. A great secret tip for families with younger children and school children. Scenes from children’s books were integrated into a beautiful botanical garden. The children can play, immerse themselves in the stories and, if necessary, look at the appropriate books, as they lie in “hidden†bookcases at the entrances to the various areas. Of course, they are mainly american books, but also stories that german children know can be found. It was all designed with a lot of love for the details and is definitely worth a detour if you are traveling nearby.

By mike maddox master gardener associations all over the state do many great things. Here is a highlight from the 2013 annual report : bookworm gardens, a free, two-acre, public garden, is really many smaller gardens — each one based on classic children’s stories. The books that inspire each garden are laminated and available nearby, where visitors are encouraged to read them with their children. From the hansel and gretel learning cottage to the charlotte’s web barn and vegetable garden, children (and adults) are transported into the world of books, plants and gardens. We are especially proud of the fact that it was one of our inspired and indefatigable members who conceived of bookworm gardens, cultivated community support, raised enormous amounts of money, oversaw the design and installation of the gardens, and has shepherded it though it’s first exciting years. Other mgvs work in the gardens, play storybook characters at events, and serve on the board.

Unique. Imaginative. Fun. Creative. I could go on. Bookworm gardens, just minutes off of i-43 in sheboygan ( http://www. Bookwormgardens. Org ), is the most amazing place i have visited in a while. My first visit was last year with my mother and my 3 kids, then ages 8, 5, and 3. We spent hours exploring the woods that have been transformed into literary-inspired "rooms". We couldn't wait to return again this summer!.

So, i had to try out this book gardens place oh well, if it was a total bust we could always go climb the dunes at terry andrae state park. Bookworm gardens successfully connect nature and literature to enrich children's lives. The main feature of the woodland area is, of course, the treehouse, based on the series of chapter books titled the magic treehouse. Our japanese teahouse and garden, based on one leaf rides the wind and sadako and the thousand cranes, is also located in the forest, showcasing woodland and shade loving plants. Finally, the cabin from little house in the big woods offers children a chance to pretend they’re keeping house in a log cabin or traveling across the midwest in a covered wagon. A myriad of other book characters call the woodland home as well; winnie the pooh, laura ingalls wilder, the three bears, and lots of tiny fairies, just to name a few.

There’s no denying that bookworm gardens is full of beautiful plants, displays, and sculptures based upon children’s literature. But one sculpture in particular is more than meets the eye. A whimsical turtle resting on a tree stump is featured in the new “water is water†display. The tree stump cleverly serves as part of the overflow structure for a new raingarden/biofilter system designed by donohue to collect stormwater, promote infiltration, and improve water quality.
