Twelve years ago, my grandmother decided one day that she was going to quit her lifelong habit of smoking cigarettes. From the age of fifteen up until she reached nearly seventy years old, she would rely on smoking daily in order to satisfy the addiction she had created for herself. But, after endless pressure from her eight kids and many grandchildren, she was able to finally put an end to her nicotine reliance. Even though she quit, the smoking had already taken a heavy beating on her lungs after over a half a century of cigarette inhalation. It was not up until a few months ago that it really started to affect her breathing. After feeling sick for an extended period of time, she went to the doctors to get herself checked out. Upon further inspection of her lungs from several x-rays, she was finally diagnosed with chronic emphysema. Nervous and scared for how much longer she had to live, she made me promise i would never touch a cigarette a day in my life. She explained how she had no idea what she was getting herself into at such a young age, she was just doing what everyone else did at the time. No one was there to tell her not to smoke; it was something she and her friends considered to be a cool and fun hobby. Her story showed me how the “innocent” choices you make at a young age can potentially be life altering.
