New report on ready to learn television by the center on media and human development a new report entitled “ the ready to learn program: 2010-1015 policy brief ” has been released by the center on media and human development at northwestern university to provide an overview of the research findings coming out of the ready to learn grantees’ efforts to innovate with educational “transmedia” to teach math to young children, ages 2-8.

Journal of children and media publishes special section on ready to learn skill gift learn how to present learn how to present television the latest issue of the journal of children and media (volume 10, issue 2) includes a special section entitled “transmedia in the service of education” that collects six papers by grantees and evaluators of the u. S. Department of education’s ready to learn television program from 2010-2015. In this special section, guest edited by shalom fisch, the authors describe their experiences using television and interactive digital media to teach math skills to young children, ages 2-8. Under this federal grant, the corporation for public broadcasting (cpb) and public broadcasting service (pbs) kids work with producers, researchers, local public media stations like wcny, and other partners to develop, distribute and evaluate pbs kids multiplatform content – including television programs, video, interactive games, mobile apps and hands-on activities – to engage children, families, and educators in learning experiences at home, in preschool, and in out-of-school settings.

The ket early childhood education (ece) team supports the cpb-pbs ready to learn initiative by promoting early learning and school readiness, with an emphasis on supporting children from low-income, underserved communities. This grant provides many different opportunities to support children and their families including: family and community learning – workshops designed not only to build children’s science inquiry and informational text literacy skills, but also to boost the confidence of their parents and caregivers, and help them realize they can support and be a part of their child’s learning experience.

Findings from Ready To Learn 2005-2010

The results of this cluster randomised trial are complex but promising. The findings suggest that ready to learn may be able to make a positive difference to children’s reading in contrast to other after school literacy programmes which have found few encouraging results. While the findings were mixed, this in part reflects the challenges of assessing the impact of a literacy programme on such young children. The most important differences were in those measures that directly assessed ‘literacy behaviour’—reading fluency, reading comprehension, and decoding. Given the importance of reading to improving the life chances of children, this is an important finding.

To effect positive change in school readiness, policymakers and stakeholders must have a reliable way to track, over time, whether preschool children are healthy and ready to learn, and must address the structural inequities that promote disparities in school readiness. The findings presented in this brief indicate that relationships can be detected between social, demographic, and economic characteristics of the family and indicators of children’s health and readiness to learn (represented by the nom hrtl) that are consistent with patterns found in previous research. Stakeholders can track nom hrtl scores across subgroups of interest to determine the need for interventions and supports and to assess whether initiatives are working to promote equity in school readiness.

Ready To Learn Workshops

The pbs ready to learn initiative is a nationwide effort using on-air, online, and print resources to help parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators prepare children for success in school. Locally, pbs reno is bringing these resources to communities in northern nevada and northeastern california. As part of our ready to learn service, we offer free ready to learn workshops specifically developed for prek through 4th grade students for educators and community educational organizations. An engaging video clip, a read aloud, and fun hands-on activities are integrated into each workshop. Lessons are aligned to the common core state standards, next generation science standards and social studies standards. All materials are supplied, and a trained facilitator will lead the 45-60 minute workshop.

Wjct’s ready to learn service combines pbs’s award-winning children’s television programming with a variety of community outreach efforts to help build children’s learning skills. As part of mpb’s ready to learn initiative, mpb early childhood staff conducts a 4-week parent academy for parents residing at springboard to opportunities apartment communities. Mpb and partner springboard to opportunities’ staff worked together to implement the parent academy workshops. The parent academy engaged parents in the early literacy learning of their children. The various themed workshops focused on family literacy, science, career discovery and much more. Parents and children were also instructed on how to use the pbs kids® website educational content. Participating families were encouraged to take what they had learned into their home to continue the lessons that would enhance what the children were learning in school. Additionally, parents learned important tips on how to communicate with their child’s teacher, ways to help with homework, how to handle behavioral issues, and how to help their child read on or above grade level.

Bilingual in english and spanish, mayte assists with all ready to learn outreach programs and activities, including family engagement workshops in public and private schools and throughout the community. Prior to joining vegas pbs, mayte was a title 1 project facilitator at the title 1 family engagement centers for more than 10 years. She also taught kindergarten for several years. I sent this to my daughter in california to use with her sons ages four and two. She has been using the book daily and after several weeks is finding that both boys are beginning to understand new concepts better. Saying the day of the week,the days that go before and after, the months, the color for the week, the weather of the day, doing the activities and repeating information they learn will be useful when they get to preschool. I do think that the slow and steady, get me ready book by oberlander is a better book as it starts from the first day of the childs life and goes through to the end of the fifth year. This book though does teach basics that every child needs to learn. Its a good book for those parents who need an already planned out program that is not too long and it does get toddlers thinking.
