When talking about photography texture refers to the visual quality of the surface of an object, revealed through variances in shape, tone and color depth. Texture brings life and vibrance to images that would otherwise appear flat and uninspiring. Capturing high levels of detail is extremely important when attempting to capture lifelike textures making exposure choices critical. Underexpose and texture will be lost in shadow and blurring, overexpose and it will be lost in blown highlights and lack of dynamic range. The texture of an object, as seen through the lens of a camera can be heavily manipulated by the use of supplemental lighting; changes in directional lighting alone can dramatically effect the visibility and depth of texture within an image.

You've probably noticed the huge boom in instagram-centric 'lifestyle' photography. It typically involves beautiful people in their teens and 20's wearing trendy clothes, trying desperately hard to look fun and spontaneous. These photos are typically shot with a very shallow depth of field , and are post-processed to heavily emphasize teal and orange tones:.

When any photographer ponders wildlife photography, he/she becomes tensed as wildlife shooting requires specific techniques and tips. But don’t worry,….

"listen, i am not a social photographer. I am not an economic photographer. I'm not a photojournalist. Photography is much more than that. Photography is my life. It's my way of life, and my language. I went to photograph the things that i had a great curiosity to see and to organize. I felt a certain revulsion, and a compulsion to show that others also have dignity, that dignity is not an exclusive property of the rich countries of the north but exists all over the planet. That's what photography was for me, my language, my life and my way of going about and doing things. ".

Because bracketing photography involves taking multiple shots with one press of the shutter, it should be used with caution when shooting fast moving subjects such as in sporting events or even wildlife. It is important to understand fundamental bracketing technique before shooting. If you plan on merging your images to create a perfectly exposed image, merging images with moving subjects will result in an image that looks more like a double exposure.

First of all, one of the things you want to ask yourself is this: “why do i take photos?” by asking yourself this question, you have a deeper understanding why you click the shutter. By answering this question, you find meaning, purpose, and direction in your photography. For example, i take photos because it helps me truly connect with a deeper level with the world. Without a camera-in-hand, i am another zombie on their smartphone. I fail to notice and appreciate the beauty of everyday life around me.

When i was a kid, i learned a game called othello, also known as reversi. I can teach you the rules in 30 seconds if i wanted to. The tagline of the game is: “minutes to learn, a lifetime to master”. And i think no other tagline is as appropriate for street photography.

20. Black & White Photography

Pictorialism is an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. There is no standard definition of the term, but in general it refers to a style in which the photographer has somehow manipulated what would otherwise be a straightforward photograph as a means of "creating" an image rather than simply recording it. Typically, a pictorial photograph appears to lack a sharp focus (some more so than others), is printed in one or more colors other than black-and-white (ranging from warm brown to deep blue) and may have visible brush strokes or other manipulation of the surface. For the pictorialist, a photograph, like a painting, drawing or engraving, was a way of projecting an emotional intent into the viewer's realm of imagination.

All that we’re talking about here today is the measure of brightness from complete dark to complete light. The range between the different brightness levels within our photos determines its degree of contrast. Take a look at this tonal scale: we move from complete darkness on the left (black) to complete light (whites) on the right. This scale applies for both color and black and white photographs. Now, let’s talk about each of these values and how they relate to your photography.

A-Z of Modernist Photography

The term emerged in the 1880s to mean simply an unmanipulated photographic print, in opposition to the composite prints of henry peach robinson or the soft focus painterly images of some pictorialist photographers. At first, straight photography was a viable choice within pictorialism, as, for example, the work of henry frederick evans. Paul strand's 1917 characterization of his work as "absolute unqualified objectivity" described a change in the meaning of the term. It came to imply a specific aesthetic typified by higher contrast, sharper focus, aversion to cropping, and emphasis on the underlying abstract geometric structure of subjects. Some photographers began to identify these formal elements as a language for translating metaphysical or spiritual dimensions into visual terms. This emphasis on the unmanipulated silver print dominated modernist photographic aesthetics into the 1970s.

While it may be difficult to imagine a time when photography wasn't considered an art form, this was the case in the late 19th- and early 20th-century. We can thank artist alfred stieglitz and other modernist photographers for helping move toward consideration as a fine art. Stieglitz, in particular, was already pushing this idea at the end of the 19th century, even publishing an article on the topic.

A general term used to encompass trends in photography from roughly 1910-1950 when photographers began to produce works with a sharp focus and an emphasis on formal qualities, exploiting, rather than obscuring, the camera as an essentially mechanical and technological tool. Also referred to as modernist photography, this approach abandoned the pictorialist mode that had dominated the medium for over 50 years throughout the united states, latin america, africa, and europe. Critic sadakichi hartmann’s 1904 “plea for a straight photography” heralded this new approach, rejecting the artistic manipulations, soft focus, and painterly quality of pictorialism and praising the straightforward, unadulterated images of modern life in the work of artists such as alfred stieglitz. Innovators like paul strand and edward weston would further expand the artistic capabilities and techniques of photography, helping to establish it as an independent art form.

How Do You Define “Photography?”

Photography is not just about holding a camera and hitting the shutter. A photograph is all about art. Only a good photographer can capture a frame in such a way, that the picture will portray so many emotions at once. Computational photography is the use of computer processing capabilities in cameras to produce an enhanced image beyond what the lens and sensor pics up in a single shot. Computational photography is common in digital cameras and especially smartphones , automating many settings to make for better point-and-shoot abilities. Using image processing algorithms , computational photography improves images by reducing motion blur and adding simulated depth of field, as well as improving color, contrast and light range.

Description[ edit ] although methods for photographing in color emerged slowly starting in the 1850s, monochrome imagery dominated photography until the mid–twentieth century. From the start, photographic recording processes such as the daguerreotype, the paper negative and the glass collodion negative did not render the color of light (although they were sensitive to some colors more than others).
